Makalu Base Camp trek takes you to the foot of Mt. Makalu (8481m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. The trekking route lies in eastern region of Nepal bounded by Tibet to the north, which is one of the remotest corners of Nepal.
This trek starts from Tumlingtar a burgeoning town in the Eastern region with the trail initially heading up the Arun River valley and later through Barun River valley. At lower altitude the trail follows trails into the forest of rhododendron, oak and maple while campsite in higher areas will be alpine meadows. The challenge of crossing three high Himalaya passes, namely Keke La (3880m), Shipton La Pass (4210 m) and Tutu La (4180m) will worth the risk. The passes offer splendid panorama of Eastern Himalayan range including Makalu, Kanchejunga (8586m), Chamlang (7,319m), Peak 6 (6,739m), Peak 7 (6,105m) etc. The highest point reached during the trek is Makalu Base Camp at an altitude of 5250m. The Makalu Base Camp offers an astounding south face of Mt. Makalu towering into the sky.
